Do I Qualify for TANF in Texas?

2026 cash assistance: who can apply, what the state pays, and how to apply

Texas pays up to $382/month in TANF cash assistance to a family of 3 with no other income. Families with income get less: the state subtracts countable income from its payment standard. You must meet Texas's income and asset limits and take part in work activities.

Which figure this is: Caretaker case without a second parent, family of 3. Child-only 3-person grant: $263; with a second parent: $418.

Who Can Get TANF in Texas

These rules come from federal TANF law and apply in every state. The dollar limits inside them are Texas's, and only Texas HHSC publishes those.

  • A child under 18 lives with you (or you are pregnant). Child-only cases for relatives raising a child exist in every state.
  • Your income and assets are under Texas's limits. They are low in every state; most families who qualify have little or no earnings.
  • Adults take part in work activities (a job, job search, training, or community service) on the state's schedule, unless exempt.
  • You cooperate with child support enforcement when a parent is absent.
  • You are a U.S. citizen or a qualifying immigrant, and a Texas resident.

Federal lifetime limit: 60 months of TANF-funded assistance for an adult (42 U.S.C. 608(a)(7)). Texas may set a shorter limit and may grant hardship extensions. If your income recently dropped, apply on your current income, not last year's.
